How printed fabrics stay fire retardant

A printed contract fabric starts as an inherently fire retardant base cloth, usually FR polyester or Trevira CS, and the design is printed onto it, increasingly by digital print, which is why the contract houses can offer so many designs and colourways. Because the fire performance is in the fibre rather than a finish on top of the print, the rating is permanent and survives laundering. Every fabric on this page is tested to BS 5867 Part 2 and the certificate is supplied with your order. Where sleeping accommodation calls for it, filter to BS 5867 Type C; the healthcare print houses test most of their ranges to it.

Choosing a pattern for a contract interior

• Scale. Large repeats need tall drops and generous fullness to read properly; on a small window they are cut off mid-motif. Check the vertical repeat on the product page against your drop.
• Setting. Bold botanicals and geometrics suit hotel public areas and restaurants; care homes and healthcare want softer, smaller-scale, lower-contrast designs, particularly where residents live with dementia or sight loss; schools can take brighter, more playful prints.
• Pattern matching. Curtains wider than one fabric width are joined, and a patterned fabric has to be matched across the seam, which uses more cloth than a plain. Our pricing allows for the repeat; the configurator does it automatically.
• Pair with a plain. Most schemes use a print on the feature windows and a coordinating plain elsewhere. The print houses design their ranges with companion plains for that reason; ask us and we will suggest them.
• Light control. Several houses print onto blackout and dimout base cloths, so a bedroom print does not need a separate lining.

Will the print fade or wash out?

Contract prints are tested for colourfastness to light and washing, and the healthcare ranges are designed for repeated high-temperature laundering. Follow the care guidance on the product page.

Can you print a bespoke design?

Yes. We work with the fabric houses on bespoke and exclusive prints for hotel and care groups; see our bespoke fabric design service or ask when you request a quote.

Do printed curtains come in Type C?

Yes, widely; most healthcare and hospitality prints are tested to Type C. Use the standards filter to see them.
