Contract cushions, bed runners and bed coverings

Scatter cushions, bolsters, bed runners, throws, bedspreads and valances made in your curtain fabric, with sizes, finishes and the fire standards that apply to filled and bed items.

Cushions

Cushions are made in the same fabric as the curtains or in a coordinating plain, so a scheme carries through from window to bed to seating. Covers are zipped; pads are FR-certified fibre.

    Scatter cushions from 30 × 30 cm up to 30 × 90 cm, including 40, 45, 50 and 60 cm squares and 30 × 50 and 40 × 60 cm rectangles. Sizes outside the range are made to order.

    Bolsters

    Cylindrical cushions for bed-heads and banquette seating, sized to the bed or seat width. Gathered, pleated or piped ends with optional button detail.

    Round, box-edged and centre-buttoned cushions used as the feature piece on a dressed bed or in lounge seating.

Bed coverings

Runners, throws and bedspreads are made in curtain fabric or a coordinating plain and sized to the bed. These fall under BS 7175 rather than the curtain standard, so the ignition source has to be specified separately.

    A band of fabric laid across the foot of the bed. Standard runners are lined and unpadded; padded runners are quilted with FR wadding for a deeper, more upholstered look.

Fire standards for cushions and bedding

Neither cushions nor bed coverings are covered by the curtain standard. Cushions are tested as filled items; bed coverings against ignition sources on the made-up piece.

Upholstered items (reference) BS 7176:2007 Headboards, seating and other upholstered furniture are classed by hazard category on the same BS 5852 ignition sources. Medium: hotels and offices. High: healthcare, care homes, hostels. Very high: prisons. Shown for reference; not currently supplied by CreateFR.

Frequently asked questions

Does BS 5867 apply to cushions and bed runners?

No. BS 5867 is a curtain standard. Bed runners, throws and bedspreads are tested as made-up items to BS 7175 against cigarette and crib ignition sources. Cushion covers are tested to BS 5852 Source 5 (Crib 5) and the filled cushion is classed under BS 7176. A fabric being BS 5867 certified tells you nothing about how it will perform on a bed or a cushion.

Can cushions and bed runners be ordered online?

They are made in the same fabric as your curtains and priced as part of the project quote rather than sold as separate products. Add the curtain fabric to a project quote from any product page and note the cushion or runner sizes you need; we price them in the same fabric and band.

What does Crib 5 mean on a cushion?

Crib 5 is ignition Source 5 in BS 5852: a small wooden crib is burned on the cover over a standard filling and the assembly must not sustain a fire. A cushion cover marked Crib 5 has passed that test; the filled cushion is then classed under BS 7176 as medium hazard, which is what hotels and offices normally require.

What size is a bed runner?

Made to the bed: 500 mm deep as standard, with the width equal to the mattress plus 300 mm overhang each side, so 1,500 mm for a single, 1,950 mm for a double, 2,100 mm for a king and 2,400 mm for a super king. Other depths and overhangs are made to order.
