Why plains carry most contract schemes

A plain or textured curtain gives dependable colour, a clean drape and nothing to date or clash with the rest of the interior, which is why it is the default for offices, hotels, healthcare and education, and the background against which a printed feature fabric is set. Every fabric on this page is inherently fire retardant and tested to BS 5867 Part 2, with the certificate supplied for your fire risk assessment. Where sleeping accommodation calls for it, filter to BS 5867 Type C.

Plain, semi-plain, textured, herringbone

• Plains are a single flat colour: the widest palettes on the site, often several dozen shades in one quality, so a scheme can be matched exactly.
• Semi-plains carry a subtle slub, fleck or two-tone weave that reads as plain from a distance but hides marks and adds interest close to.
• Textures use the weave itself, bouclé, basket, ribbed or linen-look, for surface without pattern; they suit contemporary hospitality and workplace schemes.
• Herringbones and small woven chevrons sit at the traditional end and are a staple of care home and heritage interiors.

Choosing a plain

• Weight and light control. Plains run from sheer to heavy. If the room needs light control, go straight to dimout or blackout plains rather than adding a lining afterwards.
• Colour continuity. Plains show dye-lot variation more than prints. On a phased project, tell us up front and we will advise on holding stock or ordering from one batch.
• Practical finishes. Semi-plains and textures hide wear and marks better than flat plains in busy corridors and dining rooms.
• Wide widths. Many plains are woven at 280 to 300cm and railroaded for seam-free curtains; see wide width fabrics.

Plain curtain FAQs

Which plain fabrics are washable?

Most polyester plains and dimouts are; heavier textures and wools are usually dry-clean. The product page gives the care guidance, and the FR rating is inherent so it survives either way.

Can I match a plain to a paint or upholstery colour?

Send us the reference or a cutting and we will pull the closest shades across the fabric houses and send samples.

Do plains come in Type C?

Yes, widely. Use the standards filter or the Type C collection.
